Rejected petition: Extend the law on reporting road traffic collisions with animals to include cats
Rejected on
I would like the Government to amend road traffic law so that cats are included in the legal requirement for drivers to stop and report collisions with animals. This would bring cats in line with other domestic animals such as dogs.
The current law reflects historical priorities such as livestock and working animals, but cats are now widely recognised as domestic companion animals in the UK and are required to be microchipped. Excluding cats creates an inconsistency in how domestic animals are treated under road traffic law, which should be modernised to reflect current standards of animal ownership and welfare.
