Open petition: Fund Port-a-Cath training for nurses across hospital departments
Created by Justyna Zaskwara
Closes on
Provide funding to ensure every hospital department has nurses trained to use Port-a-Caths. Patients may receive these devices because years of treatment can damage their veins. No patient should face delays, repeated cannulation attempts or avoidable complications due to a lack of staff training.
As a person with Cystic Fibrosis, I recently attended A&E and was later admitted to a hospital ward. Despite having a Port-a-Cath inserted due to years of treatment damaging my veins, staff were unable to use it because they lacked the necessary training. A peripheral cannula was used instead, which failed during treatment, causing swelling, bruising and pain in my arm. Better Port-a-Cath training could help prevent delays, complications and unnecessary trauma for patients like myself.
