Open petition: Require safe space training for businesses which advertise as safe spaces
Created by Luciana Andrea Cousin
Closes on
Amend consumer protection laws to require businesses to provide recognised training for staff in order to market themselves as safe spaces, display safe space signage, or advertise participation in safety initiatives. Failure to do so should be classified as a misleading commercial practice.
We believe a safe space claim is a promise that carries real weight for LGBTQ+ people, disabled people, women, and people from marginalised communities, who calculate whether a place is safe before walking in. Any business can make that claim, through signage, posters, websites, or marketing, without training a single member of staff. The public cannot always tell the difference as many people trust these signs. When a crisis occurs, the illusion of safety can be shattered as the staff on duty may not be equipped to respond.
