Rejected petition: Stop New Annual Property Taxes and Scrap Stamp Duty

Rejected on

We call on the UK Government to reject any new annual property taxes and abolish Stamp Duty. Homes bought with already-taxed income should not be taxed repeatedly. Government must manage public money better and grow the economy—not place ever-greater burdens on homeowners.

People already pay income tax, National Insurance, VAT and Stamp Duty before owning a home. Introducing any new annual property tax would repeatedly tax assets bought with already-taxed income. Government is accountable for how it spends taxpayers’ money and should tackle waste and inefficiency before asking people to pay more. We urge the Government to reject new recurring property taxes, abolish Stamp Duty, and focus on economic growth rather than increasing the tax burden on homeowners.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We already have a petition open on abolishing stamp duty, which you may wish to sign:

Abolish Stamp Duty Land Tax on residential properties

We do not know exactly what you are referring to in respect of the other ask of your petition - about stopping new annual property taxes: are you referring to taxes already introduced in principle but not yet in effect (such as the so-called Mansion Tax) or are you referring to possible new proposals by the new PM?

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
