Open petition: Strengthen laws to protect lodgers from discrimination and short-notice eviction

Even though there have been more protections for tenants applied in law, these do not all apply to lodgers. Unlike tenants, they have no statutory minimum notice period. We want a 1-month minimum notice period for lodgers.

Under the Equality Act 2010, discrimination in housing based on protected characteristics is generally unlawful. However, the Act contains a “small premises exemption” that allows resident landlords who share living accommodation with a lodger to discriminate when choosing who to live with.

Whilst this petition respects that conflicts are more likely in a lodging situation that may need the housing relationship to end, it believes there should be a reasonable notice period (a minimum of 1 month) and you should not be allowed to discriminate against protected characteristics (say "no transgender people" or "white people only"). Right now, we are concerned that lodging is impossible for some people due to discrimination.
