Open petition: Require signs to “use both lanes until merge in point” at lane closures

To avoid congestion and confusion, we want a requirement that partial closures of lanes for roadworks should include written signs stating to use both lanes until the point at which vehicles need to merge with the open lane. We think it will avoid an unnecessary empty lane and cause less congestion.

We are concerned there has been confusion about when to merge into a lane before closure. We believe too many vehicles are merging into the open lane too early and thereby blocking other motorists from making use of all lanes until the point at which they need to merge. This can cause issues such as heavy unnecessary congestion, and may contribute to road rage or in some cases collisions. We think that if there is a mandatory rule to add signage stating to use both lanes until the merge in point, motorists will understand to use both lanes which will ease these issues.
