Open petition: End mileage tax on EVs & plug-in hybrid cars and reduce VAT on public charging

Created by Michael Jobling
Closes on

Remove the planned mileage tax on electric and plug-in hybrid cars.

We oppose the proposed 3p/mile EV tax starting 2028, which will be 1.5p/mile for plug-in hybrid vehicles. We believe it’s short-sighted and contradicts UK investment in EV manufacturing and Net Zero goals by suppressing consumer demand.

EV owners already pay VAT on electricity (20% at public chargers, 5% at home) and PHEV owners also pay tax on petrol too. We feel this tax is double taxation and unfairly penalises drivers. We call in the Government to withdraw the tax and reduce VAT on public charging to 5%.
