Open petition: Tighten rules for triggering emergency alert system notifications

Created by Harrison Pugh
Closes on

On August 14th 2026, we believe the EAS was misused. UK government used this vital safety system to push an informative message to the nation despite, in our view, there being no active threat to life. Many have now disabled the notification meaning they won’t have it when a threat arises.

The emergency alert system should be used for active threats to life. Not having a BBQ is not that in our opinion. We think the message sent nationally in August was merely informative.

Millions found this to be an anxiety inducing event as the EAS is seen by the public as a serious emergency. Many are disabling this on their phones, reducing public safety in the event of a true emergency in the future. The conditions around what should be an acceptable trigger need to be reviewed and tightened to prevent mis-use of the system in the future.
