Open petition: Enact a multi-millionaire wealth tax to fund research for ultra-rare diseases
Created by Dhekelia Matthew-Smith
Closes on
Enact a wealth tax on multimillionaires and use the revenue to create a ring-fenced NHS and UKRI fund that would finance research, clinical trials and treatments for ultra-rare diseases.
Many families of children with terminal conditions like Sanfilippo syndrome and BPAN have to fundraise millions themselves to finance research trials or foreign care. We believe a child’s survival shouldn’t depend on private fundraising.
The Government should create a ring-fenced fund administered by the NHS and UKRI to finance research and development, clinical trials and compassionate treatment access for ultra-rare diseases, which would be sustainably funded through a tax on UK-based individuals with net assets exceeding £10 million.
