We call on the Government to introduce a national suicide prevention and wellbeing standard, ensuring care leavers have continuous support through the transition to adulthood.

A new review shows that young adults who have left care have a death rate around four times higher than the general population. Just over a third of the care leavers were thought to have died by suicide.

We want the Government to fund a national care leaver mental health and suicide-prevention programme, informed by the 2026 review and care leaver death rates. This should provide local support groups, a dedicated mental health worker alongside each care leaver’s PA, and access to specialist support. Care leavers need a clear, funded pathway to help. Government should also fund consistent national reporting of care-leaver deaths and suspected suicides.
