Rejected petition: Honour the historic parliamentary majority that voted to legalise assisted dying
Rejected on
We call on the Government to honour the democratic mandate of the House of Commons by introducing official legislation to legalise assisted dying. Elected MPs decisively approved the principle of changing the law. Allowing procedural delays to derail this vote undermines our democratic process
The House of Commons previously passed the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill with clear majorities. Allowing this democratic victory to be defeated by delaying tactics from unelected lawmakers sets a damaging precedent. It suggests that a minority can overturn the settled will of elected representatives. The original democratic victory should stand. The Government must immediately bring forward official legislation to deliver the change that the public and our elected MPs voted for.
