Rejected petition: Reduce the UK State Pension Age to 60 for Men and Women
Rejected on
Reduce the State Pension age to 60 for both men and women, through a phased transition. Allow those who wish to continue working to do so, while creating greater opportunities for career progression, younger workers, graduates and school leavers.
People are living and working longer, but this can limit opportunities for the generations coming behind them. Earlier retirement would help open positions and create a natural progression: older workers retire, mid-career workers progress, and younger people enter secure employment. It would also encourage private pensions and save earlier, while retirement spending could support the wider economy. Financial education and reduced long-term welfare dependency should form part of the transition.
