Drivers must legally report hitting dogs and farm animals, but cats are excluded. We want the Government to amend Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 to include cats, making it a legal requirement for drivers to stop and report collisions.
Cats are beloved companion animals and considered part of the family by millions of people in the UK. When a cat is hit by a car and left on the roadside, they are often left to suffer a painful death, and owners are left without closure. Including cats in the Road Traffic Act would encourage drivers to act responsibly, ensure injured cats receive life saving veterinary care, and allow owners to be notified via microchip scans.
