Rejected petition: Calculate CMS on net pay after tax/NI, set £100/month minimum & protect overtime
Rejected on
Require the Child Maintenance Service to calculate payments on net income after tax and National Insurance, introduce a minimum of £100 per month per child, and cap assessable income at a standard 40-hour week so overtime is not included.
The current system uses gross income, so working parents are charged on money they never receive after tax and NI. Calculating on take-home pay would be fairer.
The £7 weekly flat rate is too low. A £100 monthly minimum per child would ensure parents take proper responsibility and reduce the burden on taxpayers.
Many parents work overtime just to get by. Including those extra hours discourages extra work. Capping at a 40-hour week would remove this penalty and make the system fairer.
