Open petition: Ban insurance auto-renewal at a higher price without fresh consent
Created by Richard Foster-Fletcher
Closes on
Change the law to require insurers and brokers to obtain fresh, explicit consent before renewing a policy at a higher total price for the same, substantially similar or reduced cover. Include mandatory fees and finance charges and compare costs over the same period and payment basis.
Agreeing to automatic renewal should not mean agreeing to an unknown future price. When the price rises, customers should decide whether to renew after seeing the new amount. Require a clear comparison with the previous total price, a simple way to accept or decline, and advance warning if cover will end without consent. Silence or an old auto-renewal instruction should not count as agreement to the higher price.
