Rejected petition Reintroduce the dog licence.

The dog licence was law from 1867, but was abolished in 1988 under Margaret Thatcher's government. We are calling for the reintroduction of mandatory dog licensing for pets and a different licence for dog breeders and farmers including land owners who may keep fox hounds.

More details

Recent human deaths by dogs. Often family pets, livestock and wild animals are killed by out-of-control dogs. All dogs must be on leads in public places. Those that flout the law should be fined and habitual offenders do community service with their dogs being seized. Some of the fee should be allocated to rescue centres.

These are my reasons:

It will reduce:
Illegal puppy farming
Illegal fox, deer and hare hunting
Badger baiting
Dog fighting/dangerous breeds
Abuse and abandonment

It will improve:
Better control of greyhound racing industry
